Thanks--a number of people pointed me to WLPRSPL -- I'll look into it.
For my own amusement, I hope the archive has source...
Thanks to all who responded!

There are 2 cheap ways I know of:
- Thomas Heil's excellent shareware program (I think wlprs40.zip,
sunsite.unc.edu, /pub/micro/pc-stuff/ms-windows/winsock/apps/)
- CSIRO's own PMLPR, released into the public domain
(commsun.its.csiro.au, /csiro/win3/pmlpr)
Both divert output from the Windows Print Manager & can be made to work
with DOS generated output

Both wsirc12 and 12a are causing a general protection fault on my system.
Is everyone experiencing this problem?

Until I obtained a SLIP account, I was using standard modem terminal software
to connect to a Unix host at my University, and was reading Usenet news using
Unix newsreaders such as rn, nn and tin. Through my modem connection with
the Unix host, I could initiate keyword searches on that host (which would
connect locally to the NNTP host) and the results of the searches would be
sent to me. In this light, what would be the problem with your option #2: get
the NNTP server to do the searching and send you the results when done (rather
than obtaining all/groups of articles and doing the searching on your PC,
which would definitely be unreasonable)? This is exactly what I was doing
before, isn't it?
